CBS Bay Area Virtual Weather Studio
Creative Director, Myreze, 2023
After years of courting, we were finally given the unique opportunity to design a functional weather studio for CBS Bay Area, egged on by the huge successes The Weather Channel had experienced with their virtual production forays in preceding years. (Projects which I, incidentially, also worked on. :-) )
Acting as a bit of a pilot project, we had to come up with new and interesting ways of visualizing and presenting weather data, as well as dealing with the technical hurdles of ingesting complex weather data from traditional weather data solutions into Unreal Engine 4.
Of particular interest is the extremely high resolution 3D floor map of the Bay area itself, which gave a new dimensionality to the mapping data, allowing very clear visualization of the unique fog banking that frequently occurs in the area.
Not to mention, it is simply fun watching the weather anchor towering over the map, carefully stepping over the Golden Gate bridge to get to the East Bay
My responsibilities ranged from wrangling the creative team, guiding the concept and modelling process, and being the primary point of contact for the client, showcasing revisions and ingesting feedback. I was also onsite in San Francisco for the first greenscreen tests, working closely with the CBS technical team to ensure a smooth and painless onboarding process.
